Artist Statement
My sculptural work is made by digging holes in wet clay and then casting directly into the clay. The clay is then removed to reveal the sculpture. (working inside out!)
This process relies heavily on touch and gesture and only minimally on visual control and allows many interesting surprises to emerge.
To me, sculpture comes from a place too deep to have language attached to it.
Photography: my primary interest has been in photographing people in relationships. I find it fascinating to watch the structure of these relationships emerge as the sittings progress. Often the very last frame i shot was the most profound, .... As in the portrait of the elderly newly wed couple "Luther and Margaret" (he was 94 and their marriage lasted another 12 years!!)
For me, black and white film captures structure and spirit, whereas color taps into emotional subtleties.
Poetry: most of my poems come out of experiences that were either too wonderful or too difficult to be managed with ordinary language. As a result i have been a very slow poet. While i always was very serious about getting the poem as close to "right" as I was able, I did not take myself seriously as "a poet" for a very long time. The verdict is still out on that one, though for the most part the poems, as objects, please me.
Some years ago I began combining visual images with the poems using Photoshop, an example of which is the slide of "Trickle Down Economics".
All of the work, regardless of medium or level of experience tapped, reflects a deep interest in touch and the flow of energy through the points of connection we have with the earth, each other and the divine.
